Fulfilling Green IT Mandates
THINWORX Helps Organizations Save More than Money
Across all sectors – in business, government and education -- organizations are increasingly sensitive to the environmental impact of their operations. “Green credentials” are an important facet of corporate and institutional social responsibility, regulatory compliance, branding and marketing.
THINWORX’s server-based computing solution (SBC) helps organizations implement green IT policies while containing or even cutting costs. It does so by enabling a thin-client computing architecture/platform that optimizes internal resources and limits energy consumption and waste.
Server-based computing, thin clients, and green IT
Server-based computing (SBC) relocates applications from the desktop of individual PCs to a central server, from which they are deployed and managed. (Learn more about server-based computing). Centralizing and consolidating applications in this way allows end-use devices to function as ‘thin-clients’, with lower computing requirements and a smaller footprint. Clients may be dedicated thin devices or may be legacy PCs repurposed to function in the new computing environment. In either case, they consume less energy and have a longer life span. Today’s thin clients, in particular, are smaller, have greater longevity, and require fewer parts and materials than PCs. (Learn more about thin client computing)
The environmental and cost benefits of a thin client present themselves at every stage of the device’s life cycle.
- Manufacturing smaller, less complex hardware involves less use of materials like plastics, metals and electronics. Limited or non-existent microprocessor and memory demands help limit the upstream use of hazardous materials.
- The virtual absence of moving parts, like fans and hard drives, extends a thin client’s lifespan, which range from 5-7 years, compared to a PC’s 3-5 -year span. A longer hardware refresh-rate can substantially increase hardware ROI while cutting waste downstream.
- Packaging and shipping comparatively compact and light devices similarly reduces waste, consumes fewer resources and helps reduce carbon emissions.
- Thin clients consume a fraction of the power used by PCs, helping organizations conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint while lowering operating costs. The absence of moving parts has the added environmental benefit of limiting a device’s heat generation, reducing the burden on air conditioning/ cooling equipment.
- At their eventual point of disposal, thin clients produce less waste than conventional PCs, reducing the volume of landfill and lowering landfill-tax costs.
